LOS ANGELES -- Actress Mackenzie Phillips is in trouble with the law again.

The 'One Day at a Time" star was arrested today at LAX on drug charges.

Police say the 48 year-old was heading to New York when she failed to pass a security screening and a secondary search turned up a small amount of cocaine and heroin in her possession.

Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, the late leader of the singing group the Mamas and the Papas.

She has spoken publicly about her struggles with drugs.

Her first big break came in 1973 in "American Graffiti."

She went on to star in the television comedy series "One Day at a Time," but had well-publicized problems with substance abuse during the show's run and left the production at least twice.

In a return to TV in the 1990s, she played a high school drug counselor on the Fox show "Beverly Hills, 90210."

She has worked regularly in the entertainment business since.

Her last public problems with drugs date back well over a decade.
