PALMDALE, Calif. -- Workers at an Auto Zone came to a woman's rescue after she was attacked in the store parking lot by a registered sex offender, authorities say.

It happened Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. near a store in the 1100 block of East Palmdale Boulevard.

According to investigators, the victim was working on her vehicle in the parking lot when a man came up to her and claimed to be a mechanic.

When the woman refused his help, he “became angry and pinned her against the vehicle and began sexually assaulting her,” according to a statement from Palmdale Sheriff’s Deputy Robbie Royster.

The victim cried out as she tried to fend off the man, but was overpowered, Royster said.

The man fled after he was interrupted by a store employee who was walking through the parking lot, authorities said.

The employee jumped in his car and began following the suspect, while other employee called authorities.

Deputies eventually caught up with the suspect, identified as 41-year old Corey Green, near Courson Park.

Green, a registered sex offender, was on parole for another sexual assault and wearing an ankle monitor when he was caught, authorities said.

The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of undisclosed injuries she suffered during the assault, authorities said.

Green was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted rape, penetration with a foreign object and sexual battery, Royster said.

He is being held without bail.
