Keith Holmes is being held on $1 million bail on charges of attempted kidnapping of a child under 14 years old after the 81-year-old man pulled alongside the girl in his vehicle as she walked alone near the intersection of Pearblossom Highway and 85th Street just before 11am and asked her if she wanted a ride.
The girl's parents watched the exchange from a distance.
The girl's mother confronted Holmes and he sped away, but he stopped at a red light a short distance away, officials said.
The mother wrote down a full description of Holmes and the car he drove, including the car's license plate number.
She then reported the incident to police.
Deputy J. Bisantz found Holmes' vehicle and pulled him over.
After the deputy detained Holmes, the mother and daughter identified him as the man who tried to coax the girl into his car, officials said.
The deputy allegedly found items in Holmes' car that may have aided him in a kidnapping, officials said.
Officials told KTLA that he is likely to be arraigned in charges Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Holmes is a registered sex offender who police say has been arrested convicted for annoying or molesting a child twice since December 2009.
He was on probation for those convictions when he was arrested Saturday.
