POMONA, Calif. (KTLA) -- Two people are dead after a fiery crash that forced the closure of the 60 Freeway in Pomona.

The incident was reported around 3:14 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes just before between Phillips Ranch Road and Garey Avenue.

Two cars stalled on the freeway and the occupants -- a man and a woman -- exited their vehicles, officials said. A big rig then slammed into the vehicles and the two pedestrians.

One victim was thrown from the overpass on to Garey Avenue. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

At least one of the vehicles caught fire.

The identities of the man and woman have not yet been released.

The big rig driver was taken to a local hospital for observation but did not appear to be badly injured, officials said. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

All eastbound lanes were shut down in the area for about four hours following the crash. All lanes were re-opened by 7 a.m.
