NORCO -- 13 year old Brittney Peters, a cheerleader at Norco Intermediate School, has died from complications of the flu, according to health officials.
The Riverside County Health Department confirmed Peters was one of two children who died from influenza-related complications this flu season.
Students at Norco Intermediate School were hit hard by Peters' death and grief counselors were called in to help deal with the sudden death.
The other child who died from flu complications was from Fresno County, according to Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Health.
Last season, six fatal cases of pediatric influenza were reported statewide. Only one of the children had been vaccinated against the disease.
State officials describe last year's flu season as moderate in severity, according to the state Public Health Department's influenza surveillance project. The highest number of cases was reported between January and early March.
However, the 2003-04 flu season still stands as the country's worst. In December 2003, almost a quarter of all hospital emergency room visits were flu-related, statistics show.
