San Diego lifestyle trivia: What do Playboy Playmates, the Beatles, food trucks, and high school Prom have in common? Well, typically absolutely nothing; but this weekend, they have everything to do with your entertainment lineup. My top San Diego events include A Midsummer Night’s Dream Playboy Masquerade Party at Ivy Rooftop, Summer Pops with a Beatles tribute band at the Embarcadero, the Gourmet Food Truck Festival at the Del Mar Racetrack, the Petco Park Concert Series kickoff show with Dierks Bentley, and your chance at high school redemption during Prom at the Hard Rock Hotel hosted by Mr. Belding.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream Playboy Masquerade Party at Ivy Rooftop – Friday, August 19
If you’re a Shakespeare fan like I am, you know his signature play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, that follows four young lovers through a magical forest inhabited by mischievous fairies. Ivy Rooftop is channeling that vibe, and adding its own edgy twist, in hosting the Midsummer Night’s Dream Playboy Masquerade Party, which will be hosted by five beautiful Playboy Playmates. Your hot hostesses for the evening will include Amy Andrews, Jessica Burciaga, Kayla Collins, Pennelope Jimenez, and Hiromi Oshima, who will be dressed up in sexy masquerade attire. More entertainment perks include themed choreography by the Lipstik Inc. dancers, and live trumpet by Rico DeLargo. Masquerade masks are strongly encouraged, and tickets are $20, available online at ivyentertainmentsandiego.com.
Want More Playboy? If you’re ready to get wild, join Partying for a Purpose at the Ooh La La Party at The Playboy Mansion, with proceeds to benefit the It’s All About The Kids Foundation, which is based in San Diego. There are a series of events all weekend in LA, which are also hosted by the Playmates. Learn more at partyingforapurposemansionparty.com.
Summer Pops: Classical Mystery Tour Beatles Tribute at Embarcadero Park – August 19 & 20
Every summer the San Diego Symphony hosts a “Summer Pops” outdoor concert series, which takes place at Embarcadero Marina Park South, on the water’s edge in downtown San Diego. The concerts range from classical to jazz to lively tribute bands across all genres. If you haven’t experienced “Summer Pops” yet, this weekend is a great time to explore the scene as one of the best Beatles tribute bands takes the stage, the Classical Mystery Tour. They dress the part – and even look the part – and will perform your favorite hits, from “Come Together” to “Hey Jude” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. You can hang with the pretend John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as they perform Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm. Tickets start at $17, and are available online at sandiegosymphony.org.
Gourmet Food Truck Festival at Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, August 20
The Del Mar Racetrack is mixing things up this weekend and hosting the first annual Gourmet Food Truck Festival, featuring over 40 of the top food trucks in all of Southern California. The festival is going on all day, from 12 to 6pm at the Seaside Stage concert area – giving everyone a chance to chow down before, during, or after the horse races. Entry is free with your track admission, starting at $6, and you can purchase the food of your choice from your favorite trucks. Just a few of the food trucks include The Dog Shack, with handmade hot dogs; Slap Yo Mama, with soul food; Rolling Sushi Van, with gourmet sushi; Naan Stop Truck, with north Indian food; Great Balls on Fire, with slider-ball sandwiches; Crepes Bonaparte, with sweet French crepes; and Food Farm SD, with local, organic street food. While you can catch food trucks anywhere any time, Del Mar claims this is the largest Food Truck Festival that San Diego has ever seen. And there is no concert this Saturday, so your attention will be focused on the food. Learn more at delmarscene.com.
Dierks Bentley Concert at Petco Park – Saturday, August 20
The San Diego Padres have been giving us great games and fun events all summer long, and now they are adding concerts into the mix. The Petco Park Concert Series starts this Saturday, featuring Dierks Bentley, the adorable Grammy award-winning country music star. Dierks is known for his hit songs “Am I the Only One” and “Up on the Ridge”. The concert begins when the game ends, and is a free show with your game ticket. This Saturday the Padres play the Marlins, and the game starts at 5:35pm. Come early to catch the game, and stay late for a free country music concert under the stars. Game tickets start at just $5 for a Park Pass, or $10 for Bleachers. If you want to upgrade, you can purchase the VIP Package for $50, which includes a Field Reserve game ticket and on field access to the concert stage. Learn more at sandiego.padres.mlb.com.
