TNT: Emerge at Museum of Contemporary Art – August 4

Thursday Night Thing is a popular monthly event series that opens the museum up a night and appeals to a young demographic with new art exhibits, cocktail bars, DJs and live entertainment. This month’s Thursday Night Thing, or TNT, is called “Emerge” and will debut Product Porch, which is a new pop-up interior design boutique with work from emerging designers, located inside the museum that will be open for 6 months, for your hyper local retail shopping enjoyment. During TNT you can purchase hand-made accessories, statement art, and furniture, while sipping cocktails, tasting bites from food trucks, making art and jamming to live beats by San Diego Music Award nominated artists. Entertainers include Republic of Letters and The Nervous Wreckords, as well as DJ Skyler Mic. More perks include a salon style lounge and the debut of new installations from the upcoming exhibition, Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface. TNT takes place at the downtown museum from 7 to 10pm, and there is an after party at the W Hotel which is just a few blocks away. General admission is $10, $8 for students, and free for museum members. Learn more at mcasd.org.

SDFF Film Pop-Up: These Amazing Shadows at Gaslamp Theatre – August 4

The San Diego Film Festival is back for its 10 year anniversary celebration this fall, set to run September 28 through October 2. For fans that simply can’t wait until September, there is a new cinematic event series starting this week. SDFF is launching a Film Pop-Up series, beginning with the showing of These Amazing Shadows this Thursday night at the Gaslamp Theatre. This is a 2011 Sundance documentary that tells the history and importance of the Registry, a roll call of American films that reflect the diversity of film and the American experience. In true film festival style, there is a pre-show cocktail reception, and post-show director Q&A, followed by an additional cocktail reception. The event begins at 6pm, and is priced at $12 per person. Another fun perk is that you can buy SDFF passes for the 2011 event before they go on sale to the public later this month. Learn more at sdff.org.

Sassy City Chicks Summer Fashion Bash at Culy Warehouse – August 4 + 5

Is there anything better than cocktails, free spa services and discount designer shopping? The Sassy City Chicks are back in San Diego this weekend, hosting the ultimate Summer Fashion Bash at Culy Warehouse in East Village. This company travels the nation, bringing women in every city the ultimate girls night out. The main draw is the shopping, and there will be discounts of 50-80% off big designer brands, like BCBG, BB Dakota, DVF, LnA and more. There are a few different ticket options, you can spend $10 for general admission, or you can upgrade to $20 and receive admission, complimentary spa services and cocktails, and a swag bag filled with cool beauty products. The event is from 5 to 10pm on both Thursday and Friday. Be warned: you are destined to buy more when you’re a little buzzed, but you’re guaranteed to have an amazing time. Latino Film Festival’s Cinema en tu Idioma at UltraStar Mission Valley – August 5-11

I hope you are ready to watch some more movies this weekend! The San Diego Latino Film Festival’s Cinema en tu Idioma is a mini film festival that features a variety of Latino film screenings throughout the week at UltraStar in Mission Valley. It begins this Friday and runs through August 11, giving you the exclusive chance to see unique new films in a convenient format. A few of the must-see films include Without Men, All She Can, DiDi Hollywood, Blue Eyes, and Forged. My top pick is Without Men, which stars an all star cast of Latino actors including Eva Longoria, Kate del Castillo, and Paul Rodriguez. It tells the story of women in a remote Latin American town who are forced to pick up the pieces and remake their world when all the town's men are forcibly recruited by communist guerrillas. Film screenings are offered at various times every day, and tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students. Learn more at mediaartscenter.org.

Weezer Concert at Del Mar Racetrack – August 6

Ready for more fun at the racetrack? Del Mar’s popular summer concert series, 4 O’ Clock Fridays, features a live show after the last Thoroughbred horse race of the day every Friday, as well as bonus Saturdays. This week, local music lovers will unite as Weezer returns to San Diego to perform live at the racetrack’s Seaside Stage on Saturday evening. Get lucky by day, rock out by night. The concert is free with track admission, or you may attend the concert for $20. Learn more at delmarscene.com.
