SIRTE, LIBYA -- Libyan television reports Moammar Gadhafi was captured and possibly killed in his hometown of Sirte, Libya.

This news comes from the National Transitional Council

Reports of Gadhafi's capture have not been confirmed by the U.S. government, according to a State Department spokesman.  The White House also says it cannot confirm reports that Gadhafi may have been captured or killed.

Fighters loyal to the NTC took control of Sirte Thursday.

One NTV spokesman will only say that a "big fish" has been captured.

New reports from Al-Ahrar, an NTC TV station, say that Gadhafi is dead.  But the reports did not cite any sources and remain unconfirmed.

AbdelHakim Bilhajj, head of the National Transitional Council military arm in Tripoli, announced on Al-Jazeera Arabic that Gadhafi is dead.

Some news organizations have a cell phone photo that they say shows the apparent arrest of a wounded Gadhafi.
