Coast Guard and Navy crews worked together to rescue 16 suspected illegal migrants from a disabled vessel approximately 40 miles off the California coast Friday afternoon.

The crew of USS Boxer spotted the disabled boat just before noon Friday, when they saw people aboard waving their arms to signal distress. The people stated that their boat was disabled since approximately 10 p.m., Thursday.

The Boxer's crew immediately notified Coast Guard Sector San Diego of the situation and Coast Guard Cutter Petrel was diverted to the scene to assist the people onboard and tow the vessel to shore. Once on scene, the crew transferred all 16 people aboard the Petrel and took the vessel in tow.

The Petrel's crew transported the people and boat to Oceanside, Calif., at approximately 9 p.m., where the Border Patrol Agents determined all 16 people to be part of a failed smuggling attempt. The subjects were taken to a Border Patrol facility for processing.
