SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County health officials say 23 county residents have contracted West Nile virus this year.

Officials say a 51-year-old El Cajon man is the latest to contract the mosquito-borne disease. He remains hospitalized with virus-related meningitis.

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says a total of 15 people tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease locally during all of last year.

County health officials say residents can protect themselves by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants when outdoors and ensuring screens are tightly secured.
