About 100 people in 23 states have contracted salmonella food poisoning which are believed to be tied to contaminated papayas from Agromod Produce, Inc.

The McAllen, Texas company sells the fruit under the Blondie, Yaya, Mañanita and Tastylicious labels.

The Food and Drug Administration believes the illness began as early as January, but didn`t put two and two together until a recent testing of the tropical fruit from the Texas company.

Distribution of the papayas has been suspended while health officials continue their investigation.

If left untreated, salmonella food poisoning can lead to hospitalization, dehydration or death.

So, do yourself a favor; ditch the fruit and stick to eating plain saltine crackers.

Those are still safe, right?
