Allison Hickman is getting married in just over a month, but the Dallas woman knows having a ring on her finger isn't a guarantee of fidelity. Allison Hickman says, "I think the promise means we will do our best not to (cheat). You can't predict the future."
But in today's society where it seems everyday someone is choosing sex over respect, it leaves a lot of us asking: how do we protect ourselves from a wandering partner?
Nina Atwood says, "Cheating is not usually about sex." Atwood is a Dallas relationship coach and author of Temptations of the Single Girl. She says the marital messes of people like Tiger Woods and Sandra Bullock should be a wakeup call for people to focus on intimacy.
Nina Atwood says, "If you break down the word intimacy, it's "in-to-me-see". It's about self-disclosure. It's about being real."
Atwood says for couples, that means one on one focused time, like a date night or weekend getaway. It also means asking tough, open ended questions about the relationship. Nina Atwood says, "It's about taking the time to sit down and say, 'This is how I'm doing in our world together. Now are you doing in our world together?' "
For people who are dating Atwood recommends the pace of the relationship should be slow and without sex. Again, she says people should ask tough questions about past relationships and introduce a prospective partner to trusted friends and listen to what they say.
Some men and women we spoke with strongly agree all of that can add up, but say self-responsibility should be stressed as well. North Texas visitor Darren Rooney says, "It's sort of like the whole Tiger Wood thing. It's not an addiction. Give me a break. It's not an illness." Dallas resident Shelby Ferrari says, "Quit worrying about a happily-ever-after ending and the celebrity-world. Worry about yourself and your relationship. I have a lot of friends who are married at my age, 28, who aren't happy."
Also on the celebrity front, Sandra Bullock's husband issued an apology today. To see it, stay right here on the33tv.com. Hint: it's nearby.
