After years of being under fire, the new road for tobacco is smokeless. The R.J. Reynolds company is now test marketing a new product called Camel Orbs. The Orbs are placed between the lip and gum, and in about fifteen minutes the finely milled tobacco dissolves in your mouth. Company official David Howard says the product benefits smokers and non-smokers.
"These products meet societal expectations as well in that there is no second hand smoke, there is no spitting and in the case of Camel Orbs, there is no litter because the product fully dissolves in the mouth," he says.
Barry Levinson of Richardson Regional Cancer Center says dissolving tobacco is an alarming new trend.
"I am concerned about the proliferation of smokeless tobacco products, that this will substitute one tobacco product for another and we know that tobacco products are very dangerous," he says.
Jenna Spriggs and Candi Gilbert both have smoked for years, and work in a smoke free Dallas bar. Jenna says the product will allow her to enjoy tobacco indoors.
"So I don't have to go outside in the freezing cold, or in the heat and so won't have to worry about my hands smelling like nicotine or anything else, my hair smelling of smoke."
"I'm like as long as you're getting the nicotine one way or another, for a lot of people it's a hand to mouth thing, but as long as you're getting nicotine I think it would be good," she says.
Company officials say cigarette sales are down, while smokeless sales are up.
Dr. Levinson says choosing between the two products is like picking your poison.
"I think this is a harmful product, and I wouldn't focus on the attributes. I would focus on the negative aspects of the product," he says.
R.J. Reynolds officials aren't saying when the test marketing will end, or when the product will arrive in Texas.
