Something is brewing inside your local dollar store.

“Interesting kinda phenomena going on at those stores,” said Clark Hodges, market strategist.

Sales are up, repeat visits are up, and all Americans are taking advantage of it.

“I think it is a niche that every class of wealth is starting to use,” said Hodges.

Dollar stores are actually taking business away from the big name stores like Walmart or Target.  In fact, according to a recent survey, 67% of Americans have admitted to buying something at a dollar store.

“I’ll probably come here before I end up at Walmart and Target,” said Rachelle Davis.

You know where to find the deals.  But which products do you get the most bang for your buck?

Consumer advocates say cleaning supplies, greeting cards, cooking accessories, holiday decorations, and party supplies should be bought at a dollar store.

And here’s one you may not have thought of…

“They have a lot of good children’s books for a dollar,  that you can’t normally get for a dollar,” said Kerry Marr.

However, avoid things like canned food, basic school supplies, and toys.  You might get a better deal somewhere else.

“If you save 20 cents on an item, but you buy that item frequently, that adds up.  People are starting to think about that,” said Hodges.

Hodges says if you’ve never stepped foot in a dollar store, try one out for a month.  Buy your regular items at the dollar store and see if you save any money.

“You actually find the same thing that you’re finding at Walmart,” said Mekia Baley.

And customers say there’s less of a crowd than at the big box stores.  As for all these stores where everthing’s a buck…

“I think it’s something that will be here for a long, long time,” said Hodges.
