Lane Kiffin has done it again. Gotten another high profile football head coaching job. After spending 1 year as the 32 year old coach for the Oakland Raiders, and spending this past season ticking everybody off in the SEC as Tenneessee's Head Honcho, Kiffin now has taken over at sunny USC. How does this happen???

Al Davis has always liked to bunk the staus quo, hiring the first Latino (Tom Flores, read one of my previous blog entries) and African-American ( Art Shell) Head Coaches in the NFL's modern era. He has also hired young too. John Madden was just 32 years old (Kiffin was 31 when hired) when Davis annointed him to run the team. Davis canned little Lane just into his 2nd season, after not getting him to sign a resignation letter fater his 4-12 rookie year. Alright anything involving Al Davis can be throw out, too many "he saids" over the years. Let's let Lane start fresh.

Phil Fulmer finally leaves Knoxville in 2008, Kiffin gets the gig and brings his defensive genius father Monte with him. Monte helped develop the famous "Cover 2" scheme (maybe you have heard something about this in Indy???) with the Buccaneers. He was so well thought of in Tampa he had his own TV show. An NFL defensive coordinator with his own weekly TV program, wow.

Lane's lone season at UT is filled with fun stuff. Right out of the gate he publicly accuses Florida's Urban Meyer of cheating to get recruits. Does the same with the Georgia Bulldogs. Tells another potential Vol that if he chooses to attend South Carolina, "he'll be be pumping gas the rest of his life." Gets in trouble for sending good-looking coeds to recruits HS games to lure them to Knoxville. That last one is not a bad idea.

Simply put, he pisses everybody off in the league. His Vols have a so-so season on the field and lose the Chik-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. Now it's 1 and done....UT gets left in the lurch with interim coach Kippy Brown...poor Kippy.

Pete Carroll decides to leave SoCal for the Seattle Seahawks, and Boom! Kiffin gets the nod in Troy. I realize that he had spent a few years there as an assistant, and he will bring with him his dad and looks like former SC Offensive guru Norm Chow will return to the fold.

I always famously say, "it's the sizzle and not the steak." When guys come out early for the NBA draft after having a hot NCAA tourney in hoops, and I think it applies here too. The potential for wins outshines what the reality has been in the past.

I tend to think that Carroll's move is trying to stay a step ahead of the NCAA. Rumors flew over the Carroll years in SoCal about potential violations. Maybe young Lane will stick around long enough to find out if this is true, or maybe he won't. At least the coeds he can send out for those "Friday Night Lights" moments might be a little hotter.
