After months of silence about her racing future, Danica Patrick is doing quite a bit of talking this week.
Danica appeared on ABC's Good Morning America and and Fox News Channel Monday morning announcing her new contract with Andretti Autosport. GoDaddy.com is taking over the primary sponsorship of the #7 neon-green car for the IZOD Indycar Series.
She has never denied interest in pursuing other forms of racing (NASCAR) but didn't talk too much about that option on Monday.
Tuesday, however, while joining Michael Andretti on and Indycar-sponsored teleconference she offered quite a few open and honest comments about starting a career in stock cars.
Here are a few quotes and notes from Danica Patrick's December 1st teleconference:
On having to wait for this INDYCAR Announcement
"The media was quite persistent, but it was frustrating for me to not be able to say much. Some of the time, I'm sure we were working on things and bringing things together. It is nice to finally do it and set the record straight for plans for next year."
On potential opportunities outside of INDYCAR
"I've made no mystery that I'm curious about NASCAR and I'd like to do it. As a driver, if I had the chance to run in both series and challenge myself and try it, then I would like to do that."
On 2010 NASCAR options:
"We've been working on this and talking to people since the summer. We are serious about this and whether or not things come together or not, we won't know. There is no contract and no deal right now, but as I said, if I could do both I'd like to do that."
On her ideal transition into NASCAR
"In all of the talks over the summer and meeting with the people, there was a lot of emphasis on learning. I'd be prepared to start small and grow and really learn the cars. If it were to happen, I would be open to all suggestions."
On what fuels the curiosity for NASCAR (competion/business)
"It has come up in the past to run NASCAR and my heart wasn't there, I didn't want to at all, I wasn't really curious, trust me there were financial reasons why it would be a much better idea. I've always thought that the best thing for me and my career would be to go with my gut, so now my curiosity is there and I'd like to just try it....I just think the racing looks fun. I enjoy Indycar racing through and through, but I mostly enjoy the oval racing."
On the #1 Goal
"I've been lucky enough to come close to winning the Indy 500 and that is a serious goal of mine. Indycar is always going to be the focus if the other series were to happen."
On how she might balance time between NASCAR and IRL (Certain number of days and events in NASCAR?)
"The primary focus is Indycar and the Indy 500, but in and around that, there is opportunity to drive the car as well. There is not necessarily and event amount that I'm limited to, but the focus would be to run (NASCAR) before and after the Indycar season, that is the best opportunity."
If Danica pursues one of the NASCAR opportunities, there is a very good chance she will be at Daytona International Speedway for one of the NASCAR races during Daytona 500 week. The Indycar schedule is also out, and the first race is Sunday, March 14th in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
