INDIANAPOLIS, IN—Indiana's own, Tony Stewart is back in town this weekend looking to win his third Brickyard 400. Before he takes to the track though, Stewart teamed up with the Office Depot Foundation today at the Office Depot in Carmel handing out more than 5,000 backpacks to non-profit organizations and schools in the Indianapolis area.
This is the 10th anniversary of the Office Depot Foundation's National Backpack Program. Since the program was started back in 2001, they have donated around 2.3 million backpacks to children in need.
"The Foundation is tremendously excited to offer this award-winning program for the 10th consecutive year," said Mary Wong, president of the Office Depot Foundation. "Every year, we have seen our backpacks bring hope to children whose families might not be able to afford to buy them a new backpack."
The Foundation is hosting 25 "Back-to-School Backpack Celebration" in several U.S. cities and Canada. To hand out thousands of more backpacks the Office Depot Foundation has partnered with several non-profit organizations, including the Tony Stewart Foundation.
"I am very proud to partner with the Office Depot Foundation again this year and to be able to help so many kids here in the Indianapolis area," said Stewart. "All you have to do is come to one of these events and see how important it is, we're doing something positive for the community."
Even with all the autograph signings, fundraisers, and special appearances, Stewart is still focused on the Brickyard 400.
"Everybody wants to kiss the bricks," said Stewart, "that's what is important to everybody, not only to me obviously being from Indiana but everybody in the NASCAR community." The Brickyard has been very kind to Stewart. In 11 career Brickyard 400 starts Stewart has 1 pole, 2 wins, 5 top five's, and 7 top ten's. Stewart is currently 9th in the point standings and feels confident heading into this year's Brickyard 400.
"I think the last couple of races we have started to gain some momentum and started to get where we need to be,"said Stewart. "e've been here on days where I didn't think we had a shot but you go out there and in the first 20 laps you know if you have a car that is capable of winning. We have a lot of opportunities with a lot of practice to get there."
