  1. Syria's downward spiral

Reports that Russia is supplying Syrian President Bashar Assad with attack helicopters for use against rebel fighters and civilian protesters mark an ominous new phase in the country's descent into chaos and civil war. Mr. Assad's escalation from tanks and heavy artillery to aerial assaults threatens to spark a new arms race between the government and its opponents that can only lead to more bloodshed and suffering as long as he remains in power.

  3. Putin returns, and so does a Cold War mentality

Now that Vladimir Putin is Russia's president once again, the result of still another fraudulent election, we should expect ever more hostile relations with Moscow.

  7. New American citizens take their oath

The white-haired Bosnian grabbed his certificate of citizenship with two hands, held it over his head and smiled broadly. A South Korean woman bowed. A long-haired woman from Ecuador posed like a beauty queen.

  9. City raises stakes, questions in convention race

If you want to win an arms race, minor escalation is not the way to go. Only after President Ronald Reagan started developing a wildly expensive and impractical system to shoot down enemy missiles did the Soviet Union give up the Cold War.

  13. Libyan oil: To the victor go the spoils, but not when you 'lead from behind'

Because it's the U.S. Army's Energy Awareness Month, it may be a good time to remind President Obama of oil's importance to economic security and the role that wartime leadership and image play in getting your hands on it post-victory. He can't just quietly outsource and downplay war because it's icky, then call dibs on victory, as he has just done with Libya. Something has to give.

  15. U.S. energy policy: What have we got against Canada?

It's been a rough month for Canada. America's biggest trading partner and overall non-jerk country just wants to sell some oil to its friends. Canada is sitting on a black-gold mine, but its oil sales are unable to keep pace with production -- a problem that will only increase as the nation further taps the Alberta oil sands and Arctic territory.

  17. Romney's Russia remarks and the dangers of dumbing down

Last week, Mitt Romney described Russia as America's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," prompting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to respond: "I think it's somewhat dated to be looking backwards instead of being realistic about where we agree, where we don't agree."

  19. Rachel Marsden: Russia re-Putined

So Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putinhas just been re-presidented for at least another six years, during which we can all watch his newly tucked eyes migrate back to where they used to be. And as surely as a pound dog comes with fleas, this election came with "irregularities" -- cloaked in "democracy," as Russian powers like to do it.

  21. Iran and the bomb

A report this week on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program by the International Atomic Energy Agency leaves little doubt that country's ruling clerics remain determined to acquire the means to produce a bomb. That poses a dilemma for the Obama administration, which so far has tried to deter Iran's nuclear ambitions through diplomatic negotiations and targeted economic sanctions. But if the IAEA report is to be believed, that approach clearly isn't working.

  23. Nobody cares enough to do something about what's happening in Syria

Your editorial "No way out for Syria" (Jan. 24) catalogs a lot of facts about the bloody turmoil that engulfs Syria today. The editorial notes the disinclination of practically any party involved to act forcefully – apart from the Syrians risking...
