  1. Boston isn't the only outrage

Most likely we all agree that the Boston bombing was cowardly, senseless, dastardly. It cries out for justice. And just about every cop in the universe was on this case, big time.
Most likely we all agree that the Boston bombing was cowardly, senseless, dastardly. It cries out for justice. And just about every cop in the universe was on this case, big time. But what about all the drone bombings in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan,...

  3. Maybe Majid Khan rates a stateside prison cell

As a teenager in the mid-1990s, he moved with his parents to the United States from Pakistan. The family sought and received political asylum. They settled in Baltimore County and operated a gas station. The boy attended Owings Mills High School. His cricket skills helped him excel at baseball, the quintessential American game.

  5. Despite the Boston bombings, we're safer than we think

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the most frequently heard forecast was: "This changes everything."
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the most frequently heard forecast was: "This changes everything." Americans would live in constant fear of the next attack, many pundits predicted. The desire for safety would spawn a security state that...

  7. Who were the children killed in Afghanistan?

I watched 60 Minutes on Sunday and saw the anguish still being experienced by the Sandy Hook parents. Their grief has caused them to turn to action, and they are in Washington to lobby Congress to pass legislation that might prevent other gun tragedies....

  9. Time to re-think U.S. use of drones

Drones over Syria? Hold on! ("CIA eyes drone strikes in Syria," March 16). The whole business of drone strikes on nations with whom we are not at war gets murkier and more distasteful daily — and cries out for transparency from the Obama administration on drone practice and policy, especially abroad.

  11. Chuck Hagel survives

After all the thunder and lightning signifying nothing but more Republican obstructionism, former Sen. Chuck Hagel has taken over at the Pentagon, vowing a realistic approach to America's military role in the world.

  13. Carroll County native killed in Afghanistan helicopter crash

Sara Knutson Cullen was as comfortable in a dress and stiletto heels as she was smoking cigars and flying Black Hawk helicopters in Afghanistan — a driven and level-headed 27-year-old whose dreams stretched far beyond her roots in Carroll County, family and friends said Sunday.

  15. Obama returns to arms control -- just in time

President Barack Obama's call during the State of the Union address to reduce the threat of nuclear war could not have been more timely. The day before the president spoke, North Korea tested a primitive nuclear device, and the following day reports surfaced of Iranian attempts to buy technology that would greatly speed up its production of weapons-grade uranium.

  17. The law of drones

President Barack Obama's nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency, John O. Brennan, was about as cagey as they come last week at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Asked right off the bat by the committee chairwoman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whether he would be more forthcoming than his predecessors in apprising committee members of covert U.S. military operations abroad — particularly the administration's secret drone program of targeted killings — he vigorously affirmed that to be his intention. Then, for the next 31/2 hours, he politely declined to say virtually anything else of substance on the subject.

  19. Where's the concern for the innocents killed by U.S. drones?

President Barack Obama, the Rev. M. Cristina Paglinauan and columnist Dan Rodricks all have expressed sorrow and outrage over the slaughter of innocent children in Newtown, Conn. ("Stand vigil for gun victims and new laws," Dec. 23). Yet their vocal...
