  1. End the butchery

How much longer can the world stand by while Syrian dictator Bashar Assad murders his own people by the thousands and the streets of Syria's cities and towns run red with the blood of his victims?

  3. Panetta tells Naval Academy graduates to look to Asia-Pacific

With Osama bin Laden dead, the war in Iraq over and the war in Afghanistan winding down, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told graduating midshipmen Tuesday to prepare themselves for "one of the key projects" of their generation: building American strength in the Asia-Pacific region.

  5. Assad's killing fields

The announcement Sunday that the U.S. will join Turkey in providing "nonlethal" humanitarian aid to Syrian opposition groups is a clear sign of the Obama administration's growing frustration with the failure of diplomatic efforts to halt Syrian President Bashar Assad's bloody crackdown on dissent. But it's still far from clear whether that modest escalation of involvement in the conflict will hasten Mr. Assad's departure from the scene.

  7. Romney's Russia remarks and the dangers of dumbing down

Last week, Mitt Romney described Russia as America's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," prompting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to respond: "I think it's somewhat dated to be looking backwards instead of being realistic about where we agree, where we don't agree."

  9. The U.S. shouldn't prop up tyrants, even if they're on 'our' side

I awoke Monday to news that North Korea's tyrant, Kim Jong Il, is dead ("Kim Jong Il, 1942-2011: Enigmatic leader," Dec. 19). The article in The Sun was part of a confluence of events that include the military hearing at Fort Meade for accused Pentagon...

  11. GOP presidential field outdoes itself again and again

Well, it's about time. At last we have a candidate with the guts to close down our embassy in Iran were she elected president. Thank you, Michele Bachmann. Oh — and thank you Jimmy Carter as well, since he closed down the embassy there in 1980 in response to the hostage crisis in Tehran at the time. That we have had no embassy in Iran in the last 31 years matters less than that Congresswoman Bachmann has the intestinal fortitude to come out against our having one there now. It is no wonder she was the darling of the tea party.

  13. Bartlett takes a stand against America's illegal war in Libya

Congratulations to Maryland conservative Republican Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett for joining like-minded members of Congress of both parties in suing President Obama for illegally involving our country in yet a third war in Libya ("Bartlett, others sue over...

  15. Libyan oil: To the victor go the spoils, but not when you 'lead from behind'

Because it's the U.S. Army's Energy Awareness Month, it may be a good time to remind President Obama of oil's importance to economic security and the role that wartime leadership and image play in getting your hands on it post-victory. He can't just quietly outsource and downplay war because it's icky, then call dibs on victory, as he has just done with Libya. Something has to give.

  17. Naval Academy preparing officers for cyberwarfare

Huddled over laptop computers, four midshipmen spent 20 minutes setting up a wireless network and tested it with what they assumed was a private chat.

  19. Baltimorean taking up the Libyan rebel cause

As described by those who know him, Matthew VanDyke comes off as footloose and maybe a little feckless. He has worked sporadically, sometimes getting freelance writing or teaching gigs but more often traveling to the Middle East for months at a time with plans to do something, someday, with his jottings and photography.

  21. Rep. Bartlett right on U.S. intervention in Libya

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and I would agree on very few political issues. But he is correct to sue over the war in Libya ("Bartlett, others sue over Libya," June 16). While I have great empathy for the people of Libya who have lived for decades under a...

  23. VanDyke to leave Libya in a couple of weeks, mother says

Matthew VanDyke — the 32-year-old Baltimorean who was jailed in Libya for nearly six months and then stayed on to join the rebels seeking to overthrow dictator Moammar Gadhafi — plans to come home "in a couple of weeks," said his mother, Sharon VanDyke, who lives in South Baltimore.
