  3. North Korea's 'red lines'

Last April, when a North Korean missile launch appeared to be imminent, this newspaper published my commentary urging the U.S. to "get tough with North Korea." My determination that U.S. actions to date had produced little or no effect in deterring the Democratic People's Republic of Korea — the DPRK — from engaging in irresponsible, downright hostile behavior, and that an unmistakable stance of intolerance toward further provocations was needed, was based on four years of experience negotiating in and with the DPRK.

  7. Pet treat reports cause concern

You've probably seen the list floating around Facebook and email chains. It claims that dozens of brands of popular pet treats are linked to the deaths of dogs and cats, and that you should throw them all away. Is it true? Depends who you believe.

His past remarks on Israel and a gay man have already triggered some criticism. A couple of books provide a more detailed look at his political rise and his views.

  15. Baltimore should refund questionable speed camera tickets

In the capitalist-communist People's Republic of China, people encounter problems returning products that stink. In our capitalist-democracy of the United States of America, a refund on stinky products is an honored business practice. An overt sense of fairness is the glue of invisible integrity that hinges an economy based on spending.

  19. Clearing Beijing's air

Ever wonder what life in the United States would be like without a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency? The people of China have gotten a whiff of what happens when there are minimal pollution controls, and they are choking on it.

  21. View China as a partner, not a problem

In a few weeks, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be reinaugurated with great fanfare in Washington. Shortly after that, in Beijing, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang will ascend to the presidency and premiership of China. (China's premier is the second-highest office but unlike the American vice president is more like the country's chief operating officer, with the president as chief executive officer.) If our political leaders would play their cards right, the concomitant inaugurations could be prelude to a brilliant new start for our relationship with China.
