  1. Ehrlich is right; Obama's foreign policy a shambles

While some of the examples given by Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. may be debatable, certainly there should be no argument about the foreign policy of the administration is now in tatters ("Obama foreign policy follies befuddle both right and left," June 9). In Egypt, we intervened to allow the overthrow of the existing government for one that represents an Islamic authoritarian regime. In Syria, we have refused to intervene, allowing Iran and Russia to control the destiny of the uprising with both sides now antagonistic to democratic ideals. Even if we do intervene, the opportunity for a democratic regime is now gone with the present confrontation, not only in Syria but neighboring countries between Shiites and Sunnis. In the meantime, Iran's nuclear program continues unimpeded.

  5. Obama-Xi summit shows the danger of personal diplomacy

Since President Richard Nixon's visit to China in February 1972, American presidents have hoped that building personal rapport with Chinese leaders would strengthen bilateral ties and win political points at home.

  7. Fight cyberattacks, not privacy

A Defense Science Board report made public last week contained shocking allegations about the extent of Chinese military hacking of American defense technologies. Though China's government denies it — huffily insisting that it has no need for American military technology — the report disclosed that Chinese cyberattacks had yielded data from dozens of weapons systems, including missile defenses and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. That comes on top of reports that Chinese hackers had successfully infiltrated the computer systems of a wide variety of U.S. corporations, think tanks and media outlets. Hacking is now at the top of the agenda for President Barack Obama's summit this month with new Chinese President Xi Jinping.

  11. If you're going on my plate, I don't want to know your name

I have been able to buy eggs and cheese at my farmers market for a couple of summers now, in addition to the herbs, flowers, breads, fruits and vegetables.

  13. Civilization has no place for drones

In his recent speech, President Barack Obama set forth what he described as narrow, reasonable guidelines for using drones to carry out targeted killings overseas. The U.S., he said, will only use drone strikes "against terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people." Moreover, the U.S. will only act when other governments are unwilling or unable to stop terrorists in their territories and we do not have the ability to capture them.

  15. The high personal and economic cost of our broken immigration system

While the political winds seem to be propelling the first comprehensive immigration reform in more than a quarter-century, every day our broken immigration system takes a cruel and little-noticed toll on countless hardworking, law-abiding individuals and their families. On any given day, approximately 34,000 immigrants are behind bars and more than 1,000 are deported — often for minor, technical violations of laws that are too byzantine for all but the most seasoned immigration lawyers to understand.

  23. A new day for U.S. manufacturing

Remember the 1980s? It was to be the decade of Japanese dominance. A post-Jimmy Carter America would be unable to compete with the efficient Japanese jobs machine. Aging technology, lazy management and high-cost labor would ensure America's rapid demise at the hands of the ascendant Asian economic superpower.
