  5. Memorial Day: best books for the holiday

The Memorial Day weekend is a great time to pick up a book about the men and women who have helped preserve America's freedoms, and have fought for our country around the world. There are lots of great books on the topic, and some more personal readings such as diaries. For me, the one that resonates is a yellowed map and journal called <a href="http://www.lonesentry.com/unithistory/thunderbolt/index.html" target="_blank">"The Thunderbolt across Europe,"</a> which describes the route my dad's division, the 83rd Infantry, took in World War II. It led from the beaches of Normandy, across France, into Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, and into Germany. He's not big on war stories, but I can occasionally wrest one from him -- like the time he and his two brothers managed to mneet up in Paris. This may be the weekend for another.

  9. Editorial page tribute to U.S. fallen in Afghanistan showed mainstream media's bias

Your list of the names of U.S. soldiers who have died in Afghanistan since last Memorial Day on Monday's editorial page was nice, but it conveniently left out the body count ("U.S. fallen in Afghanistan," May 28). Since 2009, when Barack Obama became...

  11. Afghan war dead, a senseless waste

  21. Drones are different

The recent crash of a $176 million Navy drone in a Chesapeake Bay marsh highlights a number of brewing issues over the domestic use of this new technology. Over the past decade, since the United States' invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and framed by the Bush and Obama administrations' war on terror, the use of drones as both a surveillance tool and a means to kill insurgents has increased. This is a story about effective law enforcement, proper training, the associated costs &mdash; and the deadly consequences, intentional or not.
