A Gurnee resident has already been awarded the military’s highest tribute. On Wednesday, the Illinois Tollway also gave him his largest: A bridge.
Medal of Honor recipient Allen J. Lynch, 68, was honored with the renaming of the Grand Avenue (Illinois Route 132) Bridge over the Tri-State Tollway for his valor during the Vietnam War.
“This keeps veterans and their service before the eyes of the public,” said Lynch, as the new signs were unveiled.
Lynch, who joined the Army in 1964, is credited with single handedly rescuing three wounded comrades under fire. He “dashed across 50 meters of open ground through a withering hail of enemy fire” to defend the wounded men...
