William Henry Poffenberger, 78, of Sharpsburg, Md., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.
Born Feb. 18, 1934, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late Henry Alexander and Geneva Edith Bender Poffenberger.
He was employed by Mack Trucks of Hagerstown for 30 years, until retiring in 1991. He also enjoyed farming.
He was a lifetime member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Sharpsburg.
He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 51, Sharpsburg; a Washington County 4-H leader and great supporter; a member of National Cattlemen's Beef Association, past president of the Maryland Cattlemen's Association, member of Washington County Rural Heritage Museum and Washington County Farm Bureau, and charter member of Washington County Agricultural Education Center.
He was the environmental stewardship winner Region 1 in 1995, and won the Maryland Cattlemen's Top Hand Award in 2012.
Survivors include wife, Mary Margaret Swain Poffenberger, married 59 years, of Sharpsburg; son, Jeff Poffenberger and his wife, Julie, of Sharpsburg; daughter, Debbie Toms and her husband, Dick, of Boonsboro; son, Doug Poffenberger and his wife, Cheri, of Sharpsburg; daughter, Lisa Drake and her husband, Mike, of Sharpsburg; son, Scot Poffenberger and his wife, Christie, of Sharpsburg; son, Brian Poffenberger of Sharpsburg; sister, Jean Hutzell of Hagerstown; sister, Liz Reese of Boonsboro; sister, Rosetta Shobe of Clermont, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. Friday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Md. 65, 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at noon, with the Rev. Delancy L. Catlett officiating. Interment will be in Mount View Cemetery, Sharpsburg.
