Born Dec. 13, 1922, in Lancaster, Wis., he was the son of the late Charles and Hannah (Sulzer) Thier.
He was a graduate of West High School in Madison, Wis.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Force. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois, with a degree in architectural engineering. He was a member emeritus of the American Institute of Architects.
Following graduation, he was employed as assistant professor of architectural and engineering graphics at the University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind.; assistant construction supervisor at Southern Illinois University; construction supervisor for the Washington County Board of Education in Hagerstown; and construction supervisor for several architectural and engineering firms in the Washington, D.C., area.
He retired in 1987, and with his wife, Betty N. Gardner Thier, returned to Hagerstown in 1990.
Stanley was a member of American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown and the Exchange Club of Hagerstown, where he served as assistant treasurer and as a club photographer for many years.
In addition to his loving wife, Betty, he is survived by three stepchildren, Blair Gardner, Todd Gardner and Kristin Gardner Holden; three stepgrandchildren; a daughter, Pamela Matchett, and a grandson, Charles Matchett, both of South Bend.
He was preceded in death by his two older sisters; an older brother; and his first wife, Lucile Kinyon Thier, and their two infant children.
A memorial service will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the Academy Theatre, 58 E. Washington St., Hagerstown.
Inurnment will be held at a later date in Richland Center, Wis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Exchange Club of Hagerstown, P.O. Box 3673, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
