GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Max Harvey Sampson died peacefully on Jan. 4, 2011, in Guadalajara, Mexico, due to a major stroke.
Max was formerly married to Joan Beaird Sampson of Dadeville, Ala.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Benchoff of Hagerstown, Sarah Iselin of Pectonville and Naomi Smith of Silver Spring, Md.; and by two brothers, James, of Dallas, and Ernest, of Hagerstown.
Max is survived by one son, David Sampson of Mexico; one sister, Cathryn Smith of Charles Town, W.Va.; and three brothers, Harry, of Temple Hills, Md., Marvin, of Hagerstown, and Mark, of Jarrettsville, Md.
Max attended Sharpsburg and Clear Spring schools, and graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., in 1954.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy, flying helicopters from aircraft carriers, and later served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic.
Max had a master’s degree and law degree. He practiced law in Bethesda for 20 years and later worked for the U.S. Department of Education.
He retired to Mexico in 2008.
