MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Mr. Larry James Grossnickle, 61, of Middletown, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy, Md., after a short illness. He was the husband of Muriel (Bonnie) Grossnickle, his wife of 37 years.
Born Sept. 12, 1949, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late James Peter and Esther Elizabeth Reid Grossnickle.
He was a 1967 graduate of Middletown High School; attended Bridgewater College for two years and was in the Bridgewater touring choir.
He was a 1971 graduate of the University of Maryland, where he majored in agriculture and was a member of the college judging dairy team and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity. He was a longtime dairy and crop farmer and was a member of the Maryland Virginia Milk Producers.
He was a baptized member of the Myersville Church of the Brethren and attended Frederick Church of the Brethren for more than 20 years and was a very active member of the Pathfinders Sunday school class. He was involved in 4-H as a youth and parent, was a 4-H all star and also enjoyed singing in various choirs.
Surviving, besides his wife, are three children, Carolyn M. Grossnickle of Honolulu, Hawaii, Andrew P. Grossnickle and wife, Anna, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Stephanie Grossnickle Batterton and husband, Jim, of San Antonio, Texas; and one sister, Mary Ann Grossnickle of Middletown.
The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick. The Rev. Dr. Paul Mundey and the Rev. Brian Messler will officiate. Interment will be made in Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Myersville, Md.
