  5. Better or Worse: A warm wish for snow is no match for cold reality

Our winters have been relatively mild in recent years; but when I was young, we had to snow-shoe to school in 8-foot drifts, uphill, against the wind, both ways. Now, that's winter! I'm not a big fan of blizzards or week-long power outages. Still, I...

  11. Boys Athlete of the Week: Connor Cunningham, Loyola, indoor track and field

The Dons' standout continued his strong junior season with another dominating performance in Friday's 12-team Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association group meet at Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex, capturing two individual events and taking part in a winning relay. Cunningham, in his first season indoors after competing in outdoor track and field for the first time last spring, won the long jump and triple jump Friday, was a member of the 800-meter relay team and also took fourth place in the 55-meter dash. It's the third consecutive meet (another MIAA meet and the Frostbite Invitational) in which he has swept the long and triple jump. His season-best long jump of 21 feet, 6 inches is the best in the Baltimore metro area this season, and his triple jump of 42 feet, 11 inches ranks second. Cunningham maintains a 3.7 grade point average at Loyola.

I was on the last leg of a sprint triathlon, the run, and from across the way, I heard the unmistakable booming voice of Shawna. She was the personal trainer/cancer survivor/demon woman who, a full year before, had somehow convinced me that, at age 48, I should take up this wretched sport.
