  3. Republicans block Obama's agenda at their peril

President Barack Obama's inaugural speech was inspiring and brilliantly focuses on the correct path the nation must take in the future ("Obama 2.0," Jan. 22). The president spelled out a progressive agenda that I and millions of American citizens voted for and on which we expect this president to deliver. Ending two disastrous wars, tighter gun controls, protection of the nation's safety net of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, equality for women, minorities and gays, promotion of clean energy and addressing global warming are all critical parts of the progressive agenda that has made this nation great.

A recent article highlighted the dysfunction resulting from the broken Medicare physician payment system ("End the 'doc fix' charade, once and for all," Jan. 22).

  9. A Washington poker game with $16 trillion in the pot

Every kid knows that falling off a cliff is never good, but what about a "fiscal cliff" — how would that feel?
Every kid knows that falling off a cliff is never good, but what about a "fiscal cliff" — how would that feel? Americans may indeed find out, if Congress is unable to pass a budget plan prior to Jan. 1. So, what's at stake if such an event occurs?...

  13. Fix the debt? How about fixing private pensions first

While America's CEOs are fretting about the government's so-called "fiscal cliff," millions of American workers face a financial disaster that gets much less media attention. There's a half-trillion-dollar deficit in the nation's worker retirement...

  17. The lesson of the fiscal cliff: Our problem is jobs, not the federal deficit

I wish President Barack Obama would explain to the nation that the federal budget deficit isn't the nation's major economic problem and deficit reduction shouldn't be our major goal.

  19. Republicans' infrastructure hypocrisy

If you want to see where rank hypocrisy sits in full flower, you have only to observe Republicans at their desks in the House and Senate. There, they have been openly ridiculing President Barack Obama's proposed $50 billion stimulus bill for desperately needed infrastructure work.
