  3. Biden connects, Ryan dances

Vice President Joe Biden was stronger in Thursday's debate than challenger Rep. Paul Ryan, but the matchup didn't produce the kind of clear winner that the debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney did. Joe Biden was Joe Biden — garrulous and heartfelt, yet unabashedly aggressive in defending the administration and attacking the opposition. Paul Ryan was Paul Ryan — wonkish, earnest and controlled. Mr. Biden largely dominated the exchange in a way that will appeal to some and may turn off others. In all, the event is unlikely to upend the race the way Mr. Romney's convincing performance and Mr. Obama's abysmal one did a week before. People don't vote for vice presidents.

  5. Insurance co-op to start with $65 million federal loan

A Maryland group led by Howard County health officer Peter Beilenson has received a $65 million loan under federal health reform to start the state's first insurance co-op, a consumer-owned nonprofit that will compete against private insurers to sell health policies.

  7. The Evergreen way

The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was intended to extend health insurance coverage to 32 million of the roughly 50 million Americans who currently lack it. Yet even after the law fully goes into effect in 2014, millions of Americans...

  9. Obama's policies aren't enough to save the economy; Romney's will make it worse

The White House is breathing a bit easier. The president's awful debate performance was bad enough. If it had been followed by a bad jobs report, the president's chances for re-election might have plummeted.

  11. Freedom for dialysis patients

On Tuesday, I'm lucky to be speaking at Home Dialyzors United's third-annual meet up and conference in Baltimore. As an end stage renal disease patient currently doing home hemodialysis treatment, this is an issue I am passionate about. And, mostly...

  13. In Denver, Romney told some mile-high lies

The recent presidential debate served the American people with another dish of lies and distortions ("Battle is joined over jobs, taxes," Oct. 4). Mitt Romney is repeatedly on record as proposing a $5 trillion tax cut, but during the debate he made the...

  15. Romney wins a Denver snoozefest

Mitt Romney won Wednesday night's debate with President Barack Obama. That might be a substantial help to him in the presidential race — if enough Americans managed to stay awake through the whole thing.

  17. Maryland braces for mandatory federal spending cuts

Looming federal budget cuts the nation faces in January could strike a body blow to Maryland's economy, taking $2.5 billion in personal income out of residents' pockets and crimping social programs in health and human services, education, and workforce...

  19. Memo to Romney: It's the rich who get free stuff

Thomas Schaller, in his column, "Older, wealthier get plenty of free stuff" (Nov. 14), is right on the mark when he points out that the real receivers of undeserved entitlements in our society are not the truly needy, that is, the poor, sick, elderly...

  23. Health care reform: Caring about costs, too

By establishing a health benefit exchange and expanding Medicaid coverage, Maryland is on a path to extend access to affordable health care to hundreds of thousands of individuals, families and small businesses. For our progress to be sustainable, however, the growth in health care spending must be slowed and brought into balance.
