  1. Americans still scarred by Sept. 11 attacks

When an earthquake hit the Baltimore area recently, a familiar anxiety crept over Kimberly Anthony — not unlike her feelings after the terrorist attacks a decade ago.

  5. Medical marijuana laws make a farce of medicine

Despite the fact that marijuana remains a controlled substance that is illegal in the United States under federal law, 16 states and the District of Columbia have legalized "medical marijuana." Del. Cheryl Glenn's HB15, the "Maryland Medical Marijuana Act," was introduced and first read on Jan. 11, the first day of this year's General Assembly session. Two more bills calling for legalization of medical marijuana have been introduced since. We would like to make the case that medical marijuana, as currently "prescribed," makes a farce of medicine.

  7. Don't skimp on mental health care for veterans

Waging peace may be more expensive than waging war. That is a shocking statement when one considers the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it may be an unacceptable proposition to Americans weary of our longest war and besieged by economic crises that seem to multiply weekly.

Outfitted in scuba gear and 100 feet underwater, Cody Unser noticed a weird tingling in her legs. She dived a second and a third time, and again felt tingling. It was subtle, but it was the first new sensation that she had felt in three years, since becoming paralyzed from the chest down at age 12.

  11. Fear factor: Why we're more scared of the unlikely

Julie McKinney almost didn’t talk to us for this story.

  13. Best medicine for veterans: prevention

Veterans Day, and once again I'm shouting in my head: You people want to honor veterans? How about we dump the patriotic tinsel and give them something they can use — like all the effort it's going to take to heal their wounds for years to come.
