  1. Hopkins eventually gets it right on anti-abortion group

The bright young people in student government at the Johns Hopkins University no doubt pride themselves on their openness to a diversity of views and their commitment to the free exchange of ideas. That's why the school's Student Government Association's Judiciary Committee was right to overturn the student Senate's decision to deny official recognition to a student-led anti-abortion group. It's on just such contentious issues as abortion that vigorous public discussion and a healthy respect for the views of others are most needed, and we hope that's the lesson Hopkins' student government will ultimately draw from this imbroglio.

  3. Anti-abortion student group at Hopkins will be fully recognized

Anti-abortion activists at the Johns Hopkins University who had fought to form an official club have been fully recognized, clearing the way for them to use the institution's logo and raise cash on campus.

  5. Common sense on Plan B

Last week, a federal district judge in New York ruled that girls younger than 17 should be allowed to purchase the Plan B contraceptive pill over the counter. Unlike the Obama administration, Judge Edward Korman got this one right. The 2011 decision by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to restrict access for younger girls not only denied them a safe and legal means to prevent unwanted pregnancy but ignored all scientific evidence that supported its access.

  7. Gov. O'Malley supports life for murderers, not the unborn

The Maryland legislature recently voted to abolish capital punishment in the state, making Maryland the sixth state in the last six years to eliminate the death penalty.

  9. Column on abortion was 'well-expressed argument' [Letter]

Thank you for publishing "My word" by Maria Santo titled "Murder is not condoned by civilized societies; abortion should be illegal."  Her article is a well-expressed argument of the biological facts  concerning conception and the terrible toll that...

  11. Abortion commentary was clear call to find alternatives [Letter]

With respect to the Feb. 28 opinion piece by Ms. Santo concerning abortion, my wife and I want to compliment her for a lucid, logical and beautifully stated situation analysis. Her appeal for a "better way" than murder of innocents to deal with unwanted...

  13. Councilman pulls bill that sought to ban protests at Baltimore County schools

A Baltimore County Council member has withdrawn a controversial bill that sought to bar protests near public and private schools in the county — a measure that drew wide criticism from organizations including the American Civil Liberties Union, the county teachers union and the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, a national anti-abortion organization.

  15. The morality brigade

We're still legislating and regulating private morality, while at the same time ignoring the much larger crisis of public morality in America.
We're still legislating and regulating private morality, while at the same time ignoring the much larger crisis of public morality in America. In recent weeks, Republican state legislators have decided to thwart the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in...

  17. Abortion commentary showed understanding of issue [Letter]

I applaud Maria Santo's  journalistic valor in her article regarding abortion last week.  Her perspicacious treatment of our country's involvement in this sordid business aptly pierces the twisted logic that has rationalized and legalized the killing of...

  19. The false analogy between abortion and gay marriage

If the tenor of their questions is any indication, the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court appeared evenly divided in the challenge to California's law banning gay marriage, with Justice Anthony Kennedy, predictably, in the middle. But rather than deciding which way to tip the scales, Justice Kennedy seemed to be looking for an escape hatch. Indeed, his most persistent line of questioning to the advoates on both sides sounded more like a lament: "I just wonder if this case was properly granted."

  21. Abortion and gay marriage: Not all social issues are the same

Just because things can be put on the same list doesn't mean they are necessarily similar. My attic contains within it thousands of comic books, an inflatable bed, some jigsaw puzzles, some family pictures and a "Frampton Comes Alive!" album. These things are, roughly speaking, in the same location, but they're hardly of equal value, importance or function.

  23. We need to support those with unplanned pregnancies

Thank you for publishing Maria Santo's piece on abortion ("Our society needs to find a solution other than abortion Jan. 22"). Our community suffers from the effects of abortion every day. Women are hurt by their past abortions, men suffer because they are powerless to help their unborn children, the "little ones" (fetus in Latin) never get to be held and loved or experience the beauty of nature, the thrill of sports, the love and sacrifice of marriage. We talk about "civility" in Howard County. As Ms. Santo so articulately says, "Civilized societies do not kill children as a solution to any problem, no matter how grave." We need to support women facing crisis pregnancies with understanding, material assistance and lots of support in that way so that, as Ms. Santo says, they will not feel that their only choice is abortion.
