The 36th annual Children's Charities Tennis Classic kicked off on Friday, Aug. 8 with an abundance of action in several divisions.

The official tournament ceremony took place at 12 p.m. with many city officials and sponsors in attendance including Mayor Erin Stewart. Don Lukowski, chairman of the tournament, announced at that time, "Over $4,600 has been raised so far from the event this year. All proceeds from the Tournament will be given to various pediatric programs and projects at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain General." Over the years, CCTC has raised over $136,000.

Morning action saw play in the girls' 14's, 16's, and 18's singles as well as the boys' 12's, 14's, and 16's singles. The winner in girls' 14's was Victoria Kilborne of Bristol and the runner-up was Abby Murphy of Southington. Angela Balaoing of Southington defeated Julie Falk of Plantsville in girls' 16's action. Emily Lindsley of Bristol defeated Macee Buckley of Newington in girls' 18's singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Boys' 12's winner Ethan Sutton of Southington defeated Jacob Sutton of Southington. Matthew Balaoing of Southington defeated Ryan Dean of Newington in boys' 14's singles action 6-3, 6-0.

Lukowski stated, "It was a great Friday of junior tennis action at Walnut Hill Park. I'm very grateful to all the junior players from throughout the region who participated in Friday's divisions. We are looking forward to many more great matches this weekend."
