The Dance Workshop students of Miss Porter's School, Farmington, will be performing at the Farmington Library on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. for a family audience. (Chris Noll / February 12, 2014)
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, our main library is hosting a Fancy Nancy Party at 2:15 p.m. for children ages four to eight. Ooh la la! Join us for a party celebrating the series of Fancy Nancy books by Jane O'Connor. Dress in your fanciest outfit (tiaras, sparkles, and jewelry are highly encouraged!). We'll read a fancy story, make a fancy necklace, play games, and enjoy fancy refreshments. Also on Tuesday, the Barney Library branch is offering an iPad Claymation program at 1 p.m. for children ages eight and up. Spend two hours creating characters and making a short video.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, children ages three to nine are invited to a Little Mermaid Ballerina Party beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Barney Library. Come meet Ballerina Ariel, learn your ballet positions, hear a story, and make a craft to take home. Grownups, bring your cameras! On Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., the Kelet Ensemble will present Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf at the main library for a family audience. Each character in the story is given its own music, and played to perfection by members of the ensemble, who have rearranged the composition to fit their instruments. Katalin Viszmeg, Pi-Hsun Shih, Carlynn Savot, and Paul Hansen are faculty members at the Hartt School Community Division at the University of Hartford. Children of all ages will enjoy this tale of cunning, bravery, and skill! This concert is part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, join us for some Winter Olympics fun! This event, best suited for children ages three and up, will feature activities inspired by the Winter Olympics. Get into the Olympic spirit with crafts, games, and a lego-building station. The program will take place in the children's room of the main library, from 2 to 3 p.m.
On Friday, Feb. 21, wear your slippers to the library for a wacky dance party! Dance, clap, move and groove to silly songs from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the main library. Best suited for children ages three to eight, and no registration is required.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, families are invited to join dance students from Miss Porter's school for a dance performance and workshop at 2 p.m. The Dance Workshop students will perform the contemporary ballet piece "Operetta," choreographed by Ruth Vesenka Lewis, based on the painting of Barbara Grossman, both Connecticut artists. They will also be performing modern works and teaching ballet, modern, and jazz with audience participation.
