Hobby: Big sports fan who favors the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers.

Family: Geno met his wife, Kathy, on a double date with a community college basketball teammate in 1972; they married in 1978. Geno says he was making $13,000 a year. Daughter Jenna, 27, is married to New Britain High basketball coach Todd Stigliano and has two sons. Daughter Alyssa, 25, a stage actress, writes a blog. Son Michael, 21, played basketball at East Catholic and Assumption.

What you might not know about Geno: He is a wine collector and connoisseur with his own line available for sale.

The serious side: Hugely philanthropic, he has made contributions to a many charitable causes and has donated money to UConn for the construction and improvement of facilities.

Charity of choice: He had a long affiliation with his own cancer foundation and is a tireless supporter of the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The lighter side: Geno is the consummate wiseguy and has developed into a national spokesman for the sport. He was in rare form during the time of the breakup of the Big East: “The Catholic schools did a really good thing. They stayed at the table for as long as it took them to make as much money as they could. And once they saw all the money running out, they decided to go play somewhere else. They did what was best for them, just like a lot of Catholic schools do.”
