Michael Wilson, former artistic director of Hartford Stage, will direct Cicely Tyson in Horton Foote’s “The Trip to Bountiful” on Broadway in the spring. The 14-week limited engagement begins previews March 31 and opens April 23 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Nellie Nugent will produce.
The show will mark Tyson’s return to Broadway after 30 years. Longtime Hartford Stage designers will be part of the production: Jeff Cowie for sets, Rui Rita for lighting and John Gromada for sound
Wilson presented many Foote plays at Hartford Stage during his tenure, including the three-part, nine-hour “The Orphans’ Home Cycle.”
Wilson staged a production of “Bountiful” (which won an Oscar for Geraldine Page for the film version) at Hartford Stage in 2003, a co-production with Houston's Alley Theatre. Jean Stapleton was announced for the role but could not play the role due to illness. Dee Maaske played Carrie Watts in the Hartford production that also featured Hallie Foote and Devon Abner.Info: www.thetriptobountifulbroadway.com
