Hartford police are investigating the death of a 39-year-old man who was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to the abdomen near Wyllys and Norwich streets, not far from his home.
The victim, identified as Luis Fernandez of 17 Norwich St., was found about 9:15 p.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital, police said.
Ana Lozado, a resident of the building where Fernandez lived, said she walked to the crime scene and saw him on a gurney being lifted into an ambulance. He had been lying on Wethersfield Avenue next to a parked car, she said.
"I'm very sorry because he was a very nice guy," Lozado said.
Fernandez introduced himself when he moved into the building a year ago and said he was available to her if she ever needed help, Lozado said.
The Hartford police major crimes division is asking anyone with information about this incident to call Jerry Bilbo at 860-757-4268, Sgt. Edward Yergeau at 860-757-4257 or the Hartford Police Department confidential tip hot line at 860-527-TIPS (8477).
