Sam Chalanga of Kenya won his first Manchester Road Race, finishing the 4.748-mile course in 21 minutes, 31 seconds, on Thursday morning.

Chalanga was 12 seconds off the course record (21:19), tied last year by Aaron Braun of Englewood, Colo. Braun finished second Thursday (21:40).

Tyler Pennel of Blowing Rock, N.C. was third (22:03) and Donn Cabral, a Glastonbury native and 2012 Olympic steeplechaser, was fourth (22:07). Haron Lagat, the 2009 winner and two-time runner-up, was seventh (22:17).

Alice Kamunya of Kenya won the women’s race in 25:07. Charlotte Browning of Charlottesville, Va. was second (25:14) and Beverly Ramos of Puerto Rico was third (25:16). Olympic marathoner Desiree Davila of Rochester Hills, Mich. finished fifth (25:26) in her Manchester Road Race debut.

Kamunya entered online so there was initial confusion about who the female winner was because she was not listed among the elite athletes.

Nine-time winner Amby Burfoot completed his 51st consecutive race in Manchester, breaking Charley “Doc” Robbins’ old record of 50 straight.

There were 15,000 runners and walkers on a sunny but chilly and windy day.
