Touring companies of Broadway's "Billy Elliot," "American Idiot," "Sister Act," and "Million Dollar Quartet" will make up much of the 2012-13 Broadway series for the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford.
Also on tap as an off-subscription offering is the holiday musical, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," based on the Dr. Seuss children's story. The production, with music my Mel Marvin and book and lyrics by Timothy Mason, originated at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego years ago and has subsequently been a staple there and at presenting houses and in New York. The show will play Nov. 20 to 25 at the Bushnell.
(Trivia note: Patrick Page who now plays the Green Goblin in"Spider-Man"on Broadway, played the green Grinch in New York.)
Also on the schedule is the non-Equity national tour of "Catch Me If You Can," based on Broadway productionAs reported last week, the road company of "Mary Poppins"-- which is still playing on Broadway for more than five years -- will open the season for a slightly longer than the typical one-week run. The show will play Sept. 14 to 23.
A seventh show is still to be announced.
Three of the shows – Green Day’s “American Idiot,” “Million Dollar Quartet” and “ Billy Elliot” with music by Elton John – have a decidedly rock bent and the most rock shows in a single season for the Bushnell in a single season.
"Million Dollar Quartet," which closed last year on Broadway after 489 performance, centers on a recording session with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry lee Lewis. The show will run Jan. 8 to 13.
The rock musical "American Idiot," with music by Green Day, ended its run on Broadway after one year. The tour will play Hartfod Feb. 26 to March 3.
"Sister Act," based on the popular film, is still playing on Broadway after a year. The show is directed by Jerry Zaks with music by Alan Menkin, lyrics by Glenn Slater and book by Cheri and Bill Steinkeller. The show will run April 16 to 21.
"Catch Me If You Can," based on the Steven Spielberg film, closed on Broadway after a five-month run. Music is by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who are writing the music for the new NBC-TV series "Smash." The tour will run May 28 to June 3 in Hartford.
"Billy Elliot" will end the Bushnell Broadway season June 18 to 23.
"Billy Elliot" recently ended its Broadway run after three years. The national tour has been out for several years.
All shows will be presented in the 2,800-seat Mortensen Hall.
Subscription renewals for the 2012-13 season will be available soon, says a Bushnell spokesman. New subscriptions will be available in the spring. Single tickets for the shows will be available in the summer with dates still to be announced.
