My first set of golf clubs was a sawed-off set of my dad's. I remember playing all day for $1.50 -- 36 holes at least - at Edgewood Golf Club in Cromwell, the current site of the Travelers Championship.
If I wasn't playing, a great day would be making a few dollars working as a caddie and finding a couple of new golf balls in the woods.
I started working in the sports department at The Courant after graduating from Providence College in 1975. Over the years, I've covered high schools, colleges, the World Series, the Red Sox, Final Fours, Major League Baseball, the Whalers, UConn men's basketball, Central Connecticut men's basketball and golf.
Now I concentrate on high school sports and golf. Some of the golf events I've covered include state amateurs, high school state finals, the Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open at Wethersfield CC, the 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club in Brookline, the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage, the '04 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
In this space, I'll provide news and opinions from all corners of the course, locally and nationally. I welcome your views. You can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
