When Grand Rapids Police arrived at the scene of a shooting on Norwich Avenue SW, they found 35 year old Doraines Morales lying dead on the front lawn.

Another woman, 40 year old Evelyn Zambrana, was shot in the ankle. She was taken to the hospital.

The scene in Grand Rapids' Black Hills neighborhood developed around 11:35 p.m. Thursday. Police using a tracking dog found in a nearby alley tracks they believe could be connected to a suspect.

Friday, Morales' family gathered to grieve.

About two months ago Doraines Morales and her boyfriend of almost 20 years, Daniel Flores, had separated.

This weekend they were planning to move back in together.

“She was a wonderful woman, a great grandmother, you know she gave me three beautiful kids, she raised my oldest," Daniel Flores said.  "She was one of a kind.”

“It’s just too unreal right now,” Morales’ daughter Karines Flores said.  “It’s just too hard to face it, but God works in mysterious ways.”

The house on Norwich was not Doraines Morales' home.  She was enjoying a bar-b-q with friends when the shooter opened fire.

Her brother, Will Vera, said prior to the shooting Doraines was texting him, saying she was watching a Bulls game with friends.

“It was surreal it was a shock,” Vera said.  “I couldn’t believe it, I wish it was a nightmare, but this is one of those cases wrong place, wrong time.”

Neighbor Jessica Howard heard the shots and ran outside immediately.

"I tried to help by telling them to put pressure on the wound if they could find it, we couldn’t really find it there was so much blood and I was checking for a pulse,” Howard said.  “I kept telling them to talk to her, try and keep her responsive, and there was nothing.”

According to a press release from GRPD, moments before the shooting the suspect was seen approaching from between two houses across the street from the victim's.

He's described as a black or hispanic male with a black hooded sweatshirt. He fired a handgun multiple times, and it's believed that he ran west from the scene between the houses to a getaway vehicle waiting in the alley between Norwich and Dorchester Avenues.

There were reports of three suspicious vehicles in the area at the time of the shooting.
