Grand Rapids Christian has had a wonderful season, but it's not complete without a win tonight against East Grand Rapids. The Eagles have never beaten the Pioneers in football and they have never had an undefeated regular season. All of that can be erased with a win tonight at Memorial Field.
The teams didn't even start playing each other during the regular season until 2008 and have only met 6 times in their history, but this is still a neighborhood game and what looks like an excellent rivalry. The OK White conference title is on the line, Christian (8-0) already has a share, a win tonight and they get it outright. If East (6-2) wins, they get a share with the Eagles and Lowell (7-1) can make it a 3-way tie with a win over Creston (0-8).
There is also a good chance these teams will meet up again in the playoffs like they did last season, a 49-48 EGR win on their way to their 5th consecutive state championship. If Christian wins tonight, it's almost certain that they will play each other next week at Eagles Stadium. Be careful what you wish for, East Grand Rapids hasn't lost a playoff game in 6 years. I know that this doesn't appear to be a dominant EGR team like in years past, but there is something to be said for their postseason success. I think Christian High relishes the challenge.
Tonight, keep an eye on DeAndre Grady against Drake Harris, maybe the best athlete Drake has gone up against this season. Look for the defenses to keep this one low scoring.
