Walter Jones is an actor and dancer specializing in the martial arts. He has been featured in shows like “The Shield,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
Fans will remember him as part of the original cast of the American adaptation “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” and as Boomer in the Disney Channel Original Movie “Brink!”
Jones will be at the Florida Supercon Thursday through Sunday.
Teenlink: How did you hear about Power Rangers? What was the casting process like?
Jones: My agent called me and said ‘there’s this kid’s show and they need you to do gymnastics.” I actually missed it because I went to Florida. Fortunately, they called me back. Within three or four times, I had to dance, sing and perform gymnastics. It was a lot of work.
Teenlink: On the show, there were a lot of martial arts elements incorporated. Was that a requirement for you guys as actors?
Jones: Yes. Some specialized more in gymnastics than martial arts. Amy (Johnson) and David (Yost) were gymnasts.
Teenlink: You were written out of season two, right in the middle of it. What lessons did you take away from that experience?
Jones: It was a lesson of business. They gave me a contract that included three movies and none of the actors get anything from it. That’s how we make our living. That’s why we have SAG (Screen Actors Guild), to protect our image. So I got out of it because I got tired of it not being fair. It was a big lesson in business.
Teenlink: So you were in one of the greatest Disney movies of all time, Brink. Did you know how to in-line skate beforehand? What was the most dangerous stunt they let you do?
Jones: I was already a skater but they trained us. We trained for a week with X Gamers and professionals. It was unfortunate that my character got injured half way through.
In one scene, I slid down the ramp in my crutch. The director let me add that to the scene.
Teenlink: You were also in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. How was it working with Joss Whedon?
Jones: It was great. He was a very popular character. When you’re working on the show, it’s like the real world. It’s professional.
Teenlink: You did a movie called Backyard Dogs. Are you a big fan of wrestling? Would you get into that?
Jones: It seemed like it would be fun and entertaining to do. It was a physical movie, which I’m known for. It could have been better than it was but it was a fun project. We did some stuff that was pretty dangerous.
I never really considered it but I bet it would be fun. I’d be Walter the Warrior.
Teenlink: “A Man Without A Head” has a very interesting concept; a woman wants a child before turning into God. Can you tell me more about it?
Jones: It’s an interesting movie. It involves being ruler of the land and being voted that through competitions. Hopefully it should be out by the end of the year.
