Athletic Director Craig Angelos will make the hire, and a $70 million stadium that needs to be paid for, this will be his most important hire to date.
Mike Leach: Leach and Angelos got to know each other when they were both students at Brigham Young, and they have remained in touch since then. Leach, 50, was coach at Texas Tech from 2000 to 2009 and was known for his innovative, high-scoring offense. He was fired following the 2009 season over allegations that he locked a player in a closet as punishment. Leach has sued ESPN and Texas Tech and currently is living in Key West.
Randy Shannon: Shannon was coach of Miami from 2007 to 2010. The Hurricanes went 28-22. Shannon and Angelos worked together when Angelos was an assistant athletic director at Miami, a job he had for eight years.
Butch Davis: Davis was coach at Miami when Angelos was there. The Hurricanes were 51-20 from 1995 to 2000 under Davis, who left to coach the Cleveland Browns. Davis returned to college in 2007 at North Carolina, and he had a record of 28-23 before he was fired last month over NCAA violations that occurred under his watch.
Angelos has not shied away from coaches who have had some problems in their previous jobs.
Angelos hired Matt Doherty as basketball coach in 2005. Doherty had been forced out at North Carolina in 2003 after players complained about his coaching style. Doherty left after one season after being hired away by Southern Methodist.
Current basketball coach Mike Jarvis had been out of work since being forced out at St. John's in 2003 after NCAA violations surfaced about payments to a player. Jarvis was cited for not properly monitoring the program, but not penalized by the NCAA. Angelos hired Jarvis in 2008 and the Owls were Sun Belt regular season champions this season.
