  1. An Illinois 'Elm Street' brims with local color

    Tribune reporter
There hasn't been a new Freddy Krueger film in six years, but you can still count on seeing one or two trick-or-treaters dressed as Hollywood's favorite boogeyman each year. Next Halloween will be a different story. You probably will see more than a...

  3. These chilling, low-budget flicks are right on fright

With all the buzz about "Paranormal Activity," you'd think it was the first low-budget horror film that ever managed to get a rise out of audiences. In fact, it's the latest in a long line of cheaply made chillers. For decades, the horror genre has drawn...

  5. Counting down the scariest Halloween movies

ORPHAN (2009, Warner, R, $28): If you can get past the icky notion of demonizing orphans -- and that's a big if -- you'll discover a genuinely terrifying chiller about a 9-year-old monster-child (Isabelle Fuhrman) whose adoptive parents (Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard) rue the day they brought her home from the orphanage. There's plenty of jump-out-your-seat moments as well as a plot twist that will leave you reeling. If you're searching for the perfect bookend to ''The Omen,'' look no further than this expertly acted pulse-pounder.

  9. "Hannah Montana: The Movie" For Fans Of Miley Only

<h2 class=&quot;subhead"> "Hannah Montana: The Movie" </h2>The Disney Channel phenomenon "Hannah Montana" follows the hectic life of a teen pop star (played by Miley Cyrus) as she strives to lead a normal life incognito. In "Hannah Montana: The Movie," the heroine's celebrity side begins to develop a swelled head, so her dad (played by Billy Ray Cyrus) returns her to their Tennessee roots. This story would be just about right for a half-hour kid-com, but stretched out to fill a big-budget feature-length musical, "Hannah Montana" feels as pointlessly shiny and busy as Miley Cyrus' music. Still, the DVD and Blue-ray versions should appeal to Cyrus fans with its deleted scenes, music videos and chipper commentary track by director Peter Chelsom. ( Walt Disney)

  13. What to expect at Comic-Con 2009

Yes, it is that time in San Diego where vampires can be seen congregating in San Diego's beautiful downtown and no one bats an eye. It is the time when the Gaslamp District looks something out of Star War's Mos Eisley Cantina. It is the time when it is not only commonplace to see your cubicle partners dressed up as Superheroes, but it is expected.

  15. Skip 'The Last House on the Left'

[No 's] Vengeance porn meets the torture flick in The Last House on the Left, a new version of Wes Craven's vile 1972 cult horror movie that itself was a rank vulgarization of Ingmar Bergman's 1960 Oscar winner The Virgin Spring. It's a gore sundae with an S&M cherry on top.

  20. 'Last House on the Left'

The violence is immediate, unflinching and relentless in "The Last House on the Left," a movie of shocking sadism and cruelty. Most shocking of all is the performance of Sara Paxton. The onetime teen star ("Aquamarine") is objectified by the camera long...
