In 1976 Walter Matthau was a lovable drunk who tried to teach kids valuable lessons in his own distorted way. In 2005 Billy Bob Thornton was simply an annoying alcoholic I wouldn't want my kids around. (Really I probably wouldn't have wanted them around Matthau either. Just saying.)
