Those who get Chicago will appreciate this season's 'True Detective'

I've never seen a gangster take pliers to the gold teeth of a fat pimp. But I've seen gangsters. Not the front men who talk like movie gangsters, not the guys with big mouths, but the real thing. So when Vince Vaughn quietly grabs the pliers in "True Detective" (HBO) in a nightclub kitchen after reclaiming his domain, it's believable. Not in what he does, putting the pliers up in the mouth, but the way Vaughn approaches it; a grocer ready to bag potatoes, a clerk filling out a form. It's something they've done before.
