  1. Oscars speeches: Honestly sincere, or expertly faked?

    Los Angeles looks lush.
Los Angeles looks lush. But as often noted, it is actually an arid wasteland where nothing but artifice and self-interest sprouts naturally. That's the cynical, archetypal reading. For instance, two thirds of the way into Nathanael West's cynical,...

  3. Overlooked screenplays this Oscar season

In 1945 Raymond Chandler wrote a screed against Hollywood, and Hollywood screenwriting, for the Atlantic Monthly. "An industry with such vast resources and such magic techniques should not become dull so soon," said the man who later characterized his adopted residence to the south, La Jolla, Calif., as "nothing but a climate." In the Atlantic he vented: "An art which is capable of making all but the very best plays look trivial and contrived, all but the very best novels verbose and imitative, should not so quickly become wearisome to those who attempt to practice it with something else in mind than the cash drawer."

  5. A reflection on the merits of the historical novel vs. the historical film

Although there will presumably be no hoop skirts or beaver-skin top hats on the red carpet, this year's Academy Awards are putting a spotlight on American history. I've spent years studying, writing and teaching about the fight to end slavery, so I was excited when Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner brought that history to the screen in the Oscar-nominated “Lincoln.” But for all the glamour of a cinematic blockbuster, watching a film like “Lincoln” reminds me that the novel as a literary form has distinct advantages when it comes to deepening how Americans today understand our history.

  9. Connecticut's Oscar Favorites From Those In The Know

The Academy Awards bring out the critic in everyone. It starts when the nominations are announced &mdash; <em>"Whaddya mean, Ben Affleck wasn't nominated?"</em> &mdash; and lasts long after Oscar night. That annual ritual takes place Sunday night and will be televised starting at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. (That's the actual ceremony; the red carpet fashion show starts at 7 p.m.) To give a little inside perspective to the glitzy festivities, we thought we'd ask a few Connecticut residents &mdash; people whose lives revolve around the entertainment industry &mdash; producers, directors, cinema managers, actors, costumers &mdash; about the Oscars and the 2012 movie year in general. What impressed them? What trends did they notice? Who should win? Who will win? Let's let the experts riff ...

  11. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows &mdash; the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., a wacky bunch of journalists whose news conferences require actors to pose for pictures with each and every member.

  13. Now for real insight into Oscars -- by the guilds

The academy liked "Argo," but not its director, Ben Affleck. The Directors Guild of America nominated Affleck, but couldn't find room for "Silver Linings Playbook" auteur David O. Russell, who, naturally, received an Oscar nomination for direction. "Lincoln" won the most Oscar nods, but, now, in a post-Affleck-snub awards-season landscape, finds itself viewed by many pundits as an underdog, a movie admired more than adored.

  15. Will "Lincoln" error spoil its Oscar shot?

Connecticut congressman Joe Courtney pointed out a historic blooper in the film &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; -- and some Hollywood experts wonder if the resultant fuss will mar the film&rsquo;s shot at a best-picture Oscar. (Some even wonder if Joe Courtney is gunning for &ldquo;Argo&rdquo; because its star, Ben Affleck, had campaigned for him.) "Lincoln" had congressmen from Connecticut voting to uphold slavery when in fact all Connecticut's congressmen voted for the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. The film's writer, Tony Kushner, said that was a dramatic device to heighten suspense, and many historians say they're not concerned about the minor inaccuracy because the film captured the bigger point -- Lincoln&rsquo;s drive to get the 13th Amendment passed. What's your view? Should (or will) the inaccuracy kill the film's chance to get a best picture award? Or will the judges give the filmmakers a break, given the stirring larger story the movie tells?

  17. Another Error In 'Lincoln,' But It's OK

    The Hartford Courant
Correction: Although not constitutionally required to do so, President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment after its passage. The suggestion in this piece that he did not sign it is incorrect . With Oscar night a week away, America's newest indoor...

  19. In fact-based films, how much fiction is OK?

NEW YORK (AP) &mdash; The scene: Tehran's Mehrabad airport, January 1980. Six U.S. diplomats, disguised as a fake sci-fi film crew, are about to fly to freedom with their CIA escorts. But suddenly there's a moment of panic in what had been a smooth trip through the airport.

  21. Oscars and American history: True, or true enough?

    A modest proposal: Movies exploring some aspect of American history, such as &ldquo;Argo,&rdquo; &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; and &ldquo;Zero Dark Thirty,&rdquo; should leave off the &ldquo;based on a true story&rdquo; or &ldquo;inspired by true events&rdquo; language and stick to what &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; screenwriter Tony Kushner advocates: a clear, simple and proud declaration of &ldquo;historical fiction.&rdquo;

  23. 'Saving Lincoln' review: What were they thinking?!

    <strong>0.5 stars (out of four)</strong>
0.5 stars (out of four) I kid you not: Someone in “Saving Lincoln” actually says, “Lincoln, I had been thinkin' ...,” and it's not meant to be funny. Of course, this is a historical drama in which all of the sets are green...
