1. A Second helping of not-so 'Dangerous' comedy

After drawing large crowds to Centerstage early this year with a Baltimore-spoofing blend of scripted skits and improv comedy, a famous troupe from Chicago has returned with a sequel featuring brand-new material. Although "The Second City: Charmed and Dangerous" creatively verges on succumbing to a case of sophomore slump, it's still a funny show.

  5. Charm City gets Second City treatment

Let's face it. Baltimore is ripe for satirizing. We've probably got more offbeat people, more distinctive edifices, more colorful history and habits per block than any metropolitan area in the country. Oh yeah, and some crime.

  17. Second City Comedy comes to The Ridgefield Playhouse on May 11

Second City is a Chicago-based comedy troupe best described by the names of its past members. Names like Akroyd, Belushi, Colbert, Carell, Farley, Fey, Murray and Myers. This is improv at its finest, and the current cast will most likely contain some SNL stars of tomorrow. Friday night they'll be at the Ridgefield Playhouse for a show entitled Laugh Out Loud. OK, so it's not a great title, but trust me, they're funny.

  21. Funny or Die's Adam McKay on his site's comedy influence after five years

Five years ago this month the influential comedy website Funny or Die took a few baby steps and uploaded its first video, a rough, hastily assembled sketch that starred, appropriately enough, a baby. Pearl McKay was 2 years old at the time, the daughter of parents deeply rooted in Chicago — her mother, Shira Piven, grew up in Evanston, the sister of actor Jeremy Piven. Pearl's father, Adam McKay, got his start in the Chicago comedy scene in the early '90s, then left in 1995 to become a writer at "Saturday Night Live." The video was called "The Landlord" and featured Pearl screaming at McKay's comedy partner, Will Ferrell. Back then, expectations for Funny or Die, which seemed like just another mingling of originally produced comedy videos and user-uploaded material, fell somewhere in line with scores of other, similar Hollywood-Internet hybrid misfires — remember Dot Comedy (NBC), Pop (Steven Spielberg) and SuperDeluxe (TBS)?
